Subject: HOW TO BUILD NETWORK CABLES
If your going to make several cables and all different lengths this would be the way to go.
Before you begin you will need a few things. A RJ45 CRIMPER,
(don’t buy a cheap cheesy one, get to good one around $60 or so) You will also need a CAT 5
WIRE STRIPER, (usually a 2 in 1 tool , has a punchdown also) A CABLE TESTER (OPTIONAL) but it does help if you want to know if the cable you made works.
Below are instructions and color diagrams for the different types of
cables.

- 1. For
patch cables, 568-B wiring is by far, the most common
method.
- 2. There is no difference in connectivity between 568B and 568A cables. Either wiring should work fine on any system*. (*see notes below)
- 3. For a straight through cable, wire both ends identical.
- 4. For a crossover cable, wire one end 568A and the other end 568B.
- 5. Do not confuse pair numbers with pin numbers. A pair number is used for reference only (eg: 10BaseT Ethernet uses pairs 2 & 3). The pin numbers indicate actual physical locations on the plug
and jack.
Assembly Instructions for Patch Cables |
1) Strip off the cable jacket approximately 1 1/2".
2) Un-twist each of the 4 pairs. Straighten all 8 wires.
3)Place the wires in order as shown in 1 of the 2 diagrams shown above.
4)Re-check the order of the wires, as this is critical.
5)Hold the wires in order with your thumb and forefinger.
6)Cut all the wires straight across exactly even at 1/2" from the end of the cable jacket. Use sharp scissors.
7) Insert wires into the connector. (note pins are face up!)
8) Push the wires in so that they are flush to the end of the connector.
9) Place the connector into the crimper and squeeze hard.
10) Complete and test. (Use a cable tester !)
